I was honored to visit the City of La Joya Summer Camp and speak with the incredible kids participating this summer!

This outstanding program is packed with sports, games, crafts, and opportunities for young people to build new friendships and make lasting memories. I also had the opportunity to share a little about what it means to serve as a State Representative and how our government works — and their curiosity and enthusiasm made it an incredibly inspiring visit. Investments like this in our youth keep kids active, engaged, and connected to their community all summer long — and that is exactly what the families of La Joya deserve.

This incredible investment in outdoor recreation and quality of life will provide families with new opportunities for fitness, youth sports, and community gatherings for generations to come. UPDATE:

Several power lines are down and live. American Electrical Power is on scene working to mitigate the power line issues.

Damage assessments on the ground are ongoing. American Red Cross Canteen is on scene handing meals to residents and first responders.

A local church (Iglesia Vino Nuevo Para Las Naciones- 2691 Business 77, San Benito, Tx. )has opened their doors for any residents who may need shelter. #txlege #HD35⚠️ Weather Alert | Cameron County

Our office is closely monitoring severe weather moving through the district, and our thoughts are with everyone impacted. Cameron County OEM has reported damage to mobile homes in the Green Valley Acres area. An Emergency Operations Center has been activated at the San Benito Police Department and resources are being mobilized.

WHEREAS, National GEAR UP Week is taking place from September 21<br />to 25, 2020, and this occasion provides a welcome opportunity to<br />recognize La Joya High School for its participation in this noteworthy<br />event; and<br /><br />WHEREAS, The Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for<br />Undergraduate Programs is a federally funded initiative designed to<br />empower youth from low-income and minority backgrounds to succeed in<br />postsecondary education; the project awards six- and seven-year<br />grants to states and local partnerships composed of K-12 schools,<br />institutions of higher learning, education agencies, and community<br />organizations; and<br /><br />WHEREAS, GEAR UP offers a wide range of resources and support<br />services to middle school and high school students, such as tutoring,<br />mentoring, financial education, and scholarships, and it improves<br />access to higher education for individuals from underserved<br />communities; and<br /><br />WHEREAS, Through their vision and leadership, the faculty and<br />staff of La Joya High have helped countless young Texans reach their<br />highest potential in the classroom and beyond, and in so doing, they<br />are contributing immeasurably to the future of the Lone Star State;<br />ow, therefore, be it<br /><br />RESOLVED, That National GEAR UP Week be commemorated and that La<br />Joya High School be commended for its commitment to providing a<br />quality education for all students.

This week I toured the National Butterfly Center. Watch this video to learn about Spike, the center's tortoise, and his incredible story.<br /><br />Today, you can donate to the National Butterfly Center to help in their efforts via Facebook or at nationalbutterflycenter.org.<br /><br />In late March, the resident 17-year-old African Spurred Tortoise, was injured after a fire burned down his home. The Mission Fire Department and a U.S. Customs and Border Protection medic responded to the fire and assisted the center in extinguishing it. He was severely hurt, and they did not know if he was going to make it. He has since then had a remarkable recovery. Due to treatments and COVID-19, the center has lost a significant amount of revenue.
