In late March, the resident 17-year-old African Spurred Tortoise, was injured after a fire burned down his home. The Mission Fire Department and a U.S. Customs and Border Protection medic responded to the fire and assisted the center in extinguishing it. He was severely hurt, and they did not know if he was going to make it. He has since then had a remarkable recovery. Due to treatments and COVID-19, the center has lost a significant amount of revenue.
